Lionel Messi retained his Ballon d'Or he won in 2019 by winning it again in 2021, the award returned again after it was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic which could have been the year of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski.
Purnell watches, one of the sponsors of the event, added a special edition wristwatch watch for the male winner, Lionel Messi and the female winner, Alexia Putellas of FC Barcelona Femeni.
The special edition watch has a replica of the Ballon d'Or ball in it in a 48mm gold case. It is based on Purnell's Escape II model and will have the name of the winner engraved on it by hand.
The watch will have a limited commercial edition of which eight will be produced and will be sold for $357,620. Such a high price for a valuable item. The details on the process through which it will be sold will be announced later.
