Fans of Manchester United have gone on to criticise Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's handling of the substitutions in the Manchester United versus Young Boys match. Manchester United was playing a tightly-contested 1-1 draw away to Young Boys when the United tactician substituted prolific forward, Cristiano Ronaldo for Jesse Lingard in the 72nd minute. United would go on to lose the match, 2-1, through a stoppage-time winner by substitute Theoson Jordan Siebatcheu.

Manchester United was set for a smooth-sailing match after Cristiano Ronaldo put the Red Devils ahead from a Bruno Fernandes cross. The reds were in full control of the match, dictating proceedings until the 35th minute when marauding right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka got sent off for a reckless challenge. The Swiss champions capitalised on the numerical advantage and pulled a goal back in the 66th minute through Nicholas Ngamaleu.

In a surprising twist, Manchester United coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chose to substitute the dangerous Cristiano Ronaldo for Jesse Lingard as well as Bruno Fernandes for Nemanja Matic. This means both players who combined for the first goal were taken off and a more defensive pair of players were brought on with the game still 1-1 and United hunting for a win.

Many fans have thus blamed Solskjaer for throwing away the match due to his substitution. One can be quoted as saying that "Ronaldo off?? Shambles." Many believe that with Cristiano Ronaldo as a prolific goalscorer, he should not have been taken off while Manchester United was still chasing games.
