After swiftly defeating Avni Yildirim on Saturday, Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez still faced criticism from the local press based on the conjecture that his rivals are not up to his strength, therefore devaluing his wins.

The Mexican boxer was not happy with this criticism, and stated that this is a problem that is steeped into the Mexican press, even comparing himself to football star Chicharito Hernández.

"The very Mexican people criticise their own but when a sportsman from abroad emerges they put him at the altar," he sentenced, before stating, "If another country had a Chicharito Hernández or a Canelo it would be an honour for them, but the Mexican athlete is very rarely valued."

However, Canelo also pointed out that he tries to channel those criticisms into becoming better: "I'll take anything as motivation in order to prove that I'm the best and that they're wrong."

Back in business

Elsewhere, Chicharito reported himself to his new Los Angeles Galaxy manager Greg Vanney in training, where he received praise from the gaffer: "He arrived and has been a great competitor, he's provided enthusiasm, energy, emotion and competitiveness to the team."
