The fortune that FC Barcelona owes Lionel Messi and that made him explode until he wanted to leave
The Catalan side debts the Argentine many millions and it was revealed it is one of the reasons why he wants to leave.
Lionel Messi wanted to leave FC Barcelona during 2020, and he clearly said it out loud to all the world. The problem for the Argentine was that ex-president Josep María Bartomeu had a different plan for him and prohibited his departure, which costed his own exit later in the story.
The reasons for which the historical no. 10 wanted to leave are many, but there was one that has been revealed in the start of 2021. The Spanish press published today that Barça debts Messi two bonuses of $39 million each that they should have already paid him, but that they haven’t as they had financial problems after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Messi didn’t force the club to pay and said he will wait, even though that gesture might be seen as a wink for him leaving during the next transfer window. As his contract expires on June 2021, the legend is now available to negotiate with every club in the world he wants to, as the FIFA rules permit him to do so.
With 33 years old, there are many clubs wanting to sign him, despite just a few can afford his expensive contract. Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City or an MLS side are the options that he is considering nowadays, if he finally decides to leave Barcelona and end a relationship of loyalty based on 20 years at the club.
