Football in Europe wanted to witness some bit of disaster today. In the Premier League, in the match between Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, a fan collapsed in the stand forcing the game to be suspended for about 20 minutes. In the Dutch League a stand collapsed.

A stand at the home stadium of Dutch club NEC Nijmegen collapsed today during the match between Vitesse Arnhem and NEC Nijmegen in the Eredivisie. The incident happened in the away stands where Vitesse fans were standing and celebrating their team win when the stand made way.

People fell with the fans but the mayor of Nijmegen Hubert Bruls, claims no one was injured and has ordered an investigation into the incident. “I am very shocked by what happened. Fortunately, as far as is known, no one was injured. I want an investigation into what happened here as soon as possible.” Bruls told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Football has witnessed stadium disasters in the past with the worst being the Hillsborough disaster where 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives in a stadium overcrowding disaster in 1989. The fans are fondly remembered by the club and the football world generally on April 15 of every year.
