The end of 2020-21 season is not easy for any club in Spanish La Liga. The top flight soccer competition in the country has its biggest clubs, Barcelona and Real Madrid, in serious trouble to keep their best players in the squad, while contracts are approaching their ends and juicy offers for free transfers come from all around Europe.

The next man to depart could be Real Madrid’s center back Sergio Ramos, whose contract runs out on June 30th. Why would a player who is idolized as very few men in club’s history want to leave? Well. It’s very simple: numbers. Both parts agree in a term, but not in the other one. They are contract’s length and the salary. They are both willing to extend the contract until June 2023 Allegedly, Ramos is paid €12 million per year, which would equal around $14.5 million. There comes the problem.

Spain’s top soccer TV show El Chiringuito has confirmed this on the voice of one of it hosts, journalist Josep Pedrerol. He stated club’s president Florentino Pérez told the player: “Sergio, if you reduce your salary 10%, we offer two years, if not, just one”. Ramos’ answer was: “Presi, I will then listen to other offers”, and there was no further dialog.

To this, Spanish newspaper ABC adds the club has assured that the current crisis has forced Real Madrid to sell two players and won’t offer any more new contracts. Apart from raising money from transfers, they need to get rid of some big salaries. One of those is Sergio Ramos’.
