The novel between Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid reached a new chapter after they assured from Spain that the merengue captain let the board know what his claims are to continue wearing white. Time's running out for the experienced 35-year-old defender, who will end his contract with the Madrid entity on June 30. At the moment there is nothing closed, but the bases have already been laid.

According to the Spanish newspaper Abc, the footballer would have accepted the 10% salary cut that he had been informed by the leadership, as a result of the financial crisis brought by the Covid, but in exchange he set his conditions. There were many twists and turns that occurred since the beginning of this season (August 2020) between the defender and the board commanded by Florentino Pérez. Both Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos know that they can make each other strong but, so far, neither seemed to want to compromise on their positions.

From the club, the player had been proposed a one-year renewal, which could be extended at the end of the same season and a reduction in salary, which until the end of 2020 stood at 12.8 million euros, being the second highest paid of the squad behind Eden Hazard.

The Spanish captain on the other hand, in the first instance wanted an increase in his salary and to sign for two years. Something that will finally seem not to materialize after the media in question confirmed the new proposal of the central: accepting the 10% reduction but closing the agreement for two years (until 2023).

This proposal would go against the policy that governs Real Madrid, which established that all footballers over the age of 30 will have their contract renewed year after year, as happened recently with Luka Modric, for example. It remains to be seen if in the case of this historic defender they could make an exception.

Real Madrid has the replacements of Sergio Ramos

The truth is that the Merengue leadership went ahead and already shielded their defense for any last minute changes. The recent injury to Sergio Ramos would have helped Zinedine Zidane to start testing the new central defense with Eder Militao and Raphael Varane, in addition to having almost closed the incorporation of David Alaba, from Bayern Munich.
