It appeared like it would be a hard hit on Real after letting go of their centre back pairing of about a decade in Sergio Ramos and Raphaël Varane. Ramos was allowed to leave at the expiration of his contract after 16years at the club while Varane pushed for a move.

Sergio Ramos joined Paris Saint-Germain but is yet to kick a ball for the club with an injury he nursed for the most part of last season with Madrid and reporting coming out of the French media suggests his contract could be terminated. Raphaël Varane joined Manchester United for £34m but his time at Manchester is being disturbed by injuries.

After being Madrid's centre back partner for about 10 year, letting both players leave has proven to be a good decision. Madrid were first able to get off two of their highest earners of their payroll which amounts to about £500,000 per week which will be a huge relief on the club's finances.

Both players are suffering from different injuries which would have made keeping them at the club unreasonable as they will be unable to play and other defenders that are left now would have gone due to possible lack of playing time.
