Sergio Aguero was substituted in the 42nd minute of the match between Barcelona and Deportivo Alaves in his first start for Barcelona having joined from Manchester City on a free transfer in the summer.

Aguero was immediately transferred to a local hospital after holding his chest. He was diagnosed with a heart rhythm condition called cardiac arrhythmias which is an irregular heartbeat. Initial diagnosis ruled him out of action for at least three months with his return depending on how his treatment progresses.

Catalunya Radio is now reporting that Aguero's condition is not improving and retirement from professional football is already an option despite being in the first few weeks of his treatment.

Aguero signed a two years contract with Barcelona and reportedly earns £11.9m per year. If he retires today, the contract will be mutually terminated with Barcelona and the remainder of it will not be paid. Even if Barcelona wants to, their current financial situation means they can not.
