Sergiño Dest's origin arouses surprise and curiosity in equal parts. With an American father, Dutch mother and born in Almere (Netherlands), Koeman had already tried to recruit him for the Dutch national team but finally opted for the United States. "It was a difficult decision but I decided to follow my heart," said Dest, after opting for the Stars and Stripes.
Dest was part of the USMNT squad that played in the U20 World Cup in Poland last summer and was called up by Gregg Berhalter to play two friendlies with the senior national team against Mexico and Uruguay, making his debut against the Aztecs on September 7, 2019.
Dest began his steps in the youth academy of Almere City FC until 2012 to become part of the youth academy of Ajax. On October 15, 2018, he made his debut with Jong Ajax, the Amsterdam team's subsidiary, against PSV. Aware of his talent, on September 13, 2019 Dest extended his link with Ajax until 2022 .
With the first team he has completed a total of 20 appearances in the Eredivisie, 15 of them as a starter, and two in the Europa League.
Those who know him point out that Koeman, a key figure in sealing his arrival by expressly asking for him, will be patient enough to let him develop his skills and minimize his shortcomings in a Barça that demands immediate results.
