Lionel Messi is one of the leading contenders for the 2021 Ballon d'Or and many feels he's the favourite to claim the golden gong, his seventh, which would be a record extending victory but as many agree he deserves it, a few others are against but not as ridiculous as Frank Leboeuf's claim.

Former French international Frank Leboeuf has claimed that because Lionel Messi was red carded in the Spanish Super Cup final, he should be ignored for the award. Making reference to Zinedine Zidane.missing out in 2002 and 2006 because of similar incidents.

"In 2000 and 2006, Zidane didn't win the Ballon d'Or because he got a red card in each year,” the former Chelsea man said. Messi got a red card in the Spanish Super Cup for punching someone, that counts. If we didn't give it to Zizou, we shouldn't give it to Messi." Leboeuf told Telefoot.

Lionel Messi won't the Copa Del Rey with Barcelona last season, also reaching the Spanish Super Cup final which Barcelona lost 3-2 and Messi was given a red card. However the big one came when Messi won the Copa America with Argentina, a long overdue senior trophy for his country.
