Manchester United opened their 2021-22 season with a thumping 5-1 thrashing of Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United team. Despite not fielding any of their new signings, United showed they had enough in the tank to outsmart the Leeds players. Goals from Bruno Fernandes (3), Mason Greenwood and Fred secured a convincing win for the Red Devils. Luke Ayling scored a thumping strike to equal proceedings shortly after half-time but the Red Devils pulled away afterwards.

On what was a magnificent night for the Portuguese midfielder, Fernandes scored a hat-trick of goals to race into the lead for the Golden Boot. In doing so, he broke the 44-year record of being the first player since Lou Macari in 1977 to score a hat-trick on the opening weekend for the Old Trafford side. The No. 18 scored in the 30th, 52nd and 54th minute of the match at Old Trafford. He also becomes the first midfielder to score a hat-trick for United since Cristiano Ronaldo.

In another development, Paul Pogba was also on song against Leeds United as he provided 4 assists in the 6-goal thriller at the Old Trafford. The French man provided assists for all of Bruno Fernandes' goals whilst also giving the final pass that led to Mason Greenwood's goal. Pogba, Fernandes and Daniel James formed an attacking trident behind Mason Greenwood in the attack.
