The Ballon d'Or event returns this year after a one year hiatus due to Covid pandemic. The last edition was in 2019 and was won by Lionel Messi. Robert Lewandowski should have won the 2020 edition but it never held.

Lewandowski is still in contention for this year's award and is Messi's main rival to win it. Messi has arrived at the event with his wife Antonella, and his three sons, Thiago, Mateo and Ciro.
