Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench for yesterday's Serie A opener against Udinese. The Portuguese star was only a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw that saw Juventus squander a 2-0 lead after half-time. Ronaldo thought he had secured the points for the Bianconeri with a last-gasp effort but the goal was ruled out by VAR for an offside in the build-up to the goal.

In the aftermath of the match, Juventus coach, Massimiliano Allegri and Juventus director, Pavel Nedved were at full stretch to quieten rumours about the future of the 5-time Ballon d'Or winner. Allegri and Nedved told the media that Ronaldo was put on the bench due to sporting reasons. They also stated that the Portuguese international has never asked to leave.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo specifically requested that he should not be put in the first-team against Udinese. This is because the former Real Madrid player is looking at making a move before the summer transfer ends. It was also rumoured that Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, has offered the forward to clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

For any deal to be done for Ronaldo this summer, any interested club would be required to stump up £35m to release the player from the outstanding 12 months on his Juventus contract. The £35m transfer fee would ensure that Juventus does not make a capital loss on the Portuguese star. Additionally, suitors would also have to be willing to match the £35m in wages that the prolific forward earns at Juventus.

There are only a few clubs who can afford such figures, with Manchester City the most likely. In need of a proven goalscorer, the Citizens might consider him as a stop-gap before getting a younger striker. PSG and Chelsea are the other clubs with the financial clout to sign the player but with the signing of Lionel Messi & Romelu Lukaku respectively, both clubs do not require a striker at the moment.
