The aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic has left many clubs in precarious financial situations. Many clubs aren't able to come up with the funds to sign their top transfer targets while other clubs are not able to offer their players the increased wages they want.

Thus, many quality players are heading for free agency in 2022. This seems to be the perfect solution for clubs. However, the players are the biggest winners with massive wages waiting for them. We'll look at the top players that would have otherwise cost £100m+ but who might be available for free next season.

Cristiano Ronaldo: The Portugal international is top of the list. Any transfer involving money with the 5-time Ballon d'Or winner would cost over £100m. But with most clubs cash-strapped, they can't afford such outlay. Juventus are also facing financial difficulties and cannot renew his £25m a year contract at the Allianz Arena. Thus, it seems the talismanic forward will run down his contract and be a free agent by 2022.

Kylian Mbappe: The fleet-footed forward is another superstar on the edge if free agency. Mbappe has so far not committed to a new contract at PSG despite his current one expiring in 2022. Real Madrid are believed to be his preferred destination but financial struggles might make the deal difficult. He might wait till next summer to move to the Santiago Bernabeu for free.

Paul Pogba: The objective is clear for Manchester United: Sell Pogba now it lose him for free next season. The French midfielder is another £100m+ player who could hit free agency next summer. However, PSG are rumoured to be considering a cut-price £50m bid to take the World Cup winner out of Old Trafford this summer.
