Barcelona sold Neymar to PSG in 2017 and spent part of the proceeds in signing French winger Ousmane Dembele but after injuries crippled his debut season, Barcelona went into the market again in 2018, this time to sign Brazilian attacker Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool.

Coutinho joined Barcelona for an initial fee of €140m with several add-ons that will make the deal rise to about €200m and up till this moment there are soon to be fulfilled clauses that will make Barcelona pay Liverpool up to €20m even though the transfer has not gone well for both club and player.

Philippe Coutinho has been a shadow of his best at Liverpool. He barely had good and consistent performances in a Barcelona shirt and spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Bayern Munich where he won the German league and the coveted UEFA Champions League, scoring twice against Barcelona in the 8-2 mauling.

He returned to Barcelona afterwards and has been battling injuries since then. He made his return to action in the 3-1 win over Valencia where he scored his first goal in 11 months. Head coach Ronald Koeman said after the match that he has always believed in the Brazilian offering him a chance to redeem himself despite reports linking him to an exit including to Newcastle United.
