Over 100% more: See how Ronaldo made £13m for Manchester United on his debut

Cristiano Ronaldo made his debut for Manchester United for the second time in his career. When the then 19-year-old forward joined United from Sporting Lisbon, he was just a teenager whom no one knew about. Joining from the Portuguese club after just 1 season, his signing didn't make so much buzz around Old Trafford.

However, when he left after 5 years, he has become a global superstar and left for a then world-record fee to join Real Madrid. Since then, Ronaldo's career has made as much impact off the pitch as he has made on the pitch. One of these areas of influence is the commercial aspect of the game. Building a credible personal brand and a cult of millions of followers, Cristiano Ronaldo often makes huge amounts of money for whichever club he plays for. 

This trend continued when the 5-time Ballon d'Or winner made his second debut for Manchester United on Saturday against Newcastle United. His expected debut for the club made sure the 76,000 capacity stadium was filled to the brim with supporters wanting to catch a glimpse of Cristiano Ronaldo. This helped United to make an incredible £24.47m from only ticket sales for Ronaldo's debut. 

Ticket prices at the Old Trafford range from between  £90 to £150 for UEFA Champions League matches and EPL matches while other EPL matches cost as high as £200 for a ticket seat. However, buying Cristiano Ronaldo's debut ticket cost between £322 to £300 for the match. This means over 100% of the money usually got from ticket sales was made during the debut of Cristiano Ronaldo. 

The additional £13m made by Manchester United is enough to offset the £13m that United paid to sign the player. This could also be a sustainable increase in the ticket earnings made by Manchester United.
