Nobody likes to have his personal fortune or salary made public. Even less if that can come from the same place who leaks the information. That is what has allegedly made Lionel Messi furious on Saturday evening. The Argentinian master has seen his contract details with Barcelona leaked by local newspapers.
El Mundo, one of Spain’s most sold publications, has put on their Sunday cover a huge investigation around Messi’s contract with Barcelona. Of course, it points at the forward as a sort of ‘responsible’ for Barcelona’s financial struggles. This comes days after reports claiming that the club has debts for over $700 million.
“555,237,619”, says the cover, referring to the amount in euros that Messi has allegedly been paid throughout his current contract, signed on November 25, 2017. The newspaper has published a scan of some of the contract’s pages. The figure would equal to $671,837,519.
If we speak in simple terms, this contract would report $167 million per season including fixed salary and extra bonuses. Some of these include a renewal bonus of $139 million and a loyalty bonus of around $94 million.
