This Monday, Lionel Messi and the coach of the Argentine National Team, Lionel Scaloni, received news that no one wanted to hear. It is that Germany decided to summon one of the great jewels that Argentina has to play with that country, in a novelty that no one in the Argentine Football Association (AFA) wanted to receive.

The midfielder Mateo Klimowicz, currently in Stuttgart and trained at the Instituto of Córdoba, was called up today for the German under-21 team. Mateo, son of Diego, a former Instituto scorer, was summoned for the first time by coach Stefan Kuntz to face the matches against Hungary, on March 24, the Netherlands, on March 27, and Romania, on March 30, for the European under-21 championship.

“He's an agile player, determined that he goes where it hurts his rivals. He has a good rhythm for free movements and many strengths”, said Pellegrino Matarazzo, the Stuttgart coach, who has Klimowicz as one of his key players to give him options from the bench and for whom he is betting in the future.

It is worth clarifying that it isn't the first time that a Klimowicz has been on the radar of national teams from other countries. Diego, Mateo's father, received an offer from Poland to be nationalized so that in the 2002 World Cup he would pair up with the Nigerian Olisadebe, but he rejected that proposal. For Germany 2006 the Ukraine team offered him the same to pair with Shevchenko and he also refused.

The trajectory of Mateo Klimowicz

Klimowicz, born in Córdoba on July 6, 2000, made his debut at the Institute in 2017 at the age of 17 and in 2019 was sold to Stuttgart, where he has already played 29 games, between Bundesliga II and Bundesliga. The Cordovan is an attacking midfielder, he shares a team with Nicolás González and this season he played 22 games and scored a goal.
