Lionel Messi is one of the leading candidates for the 2021 Ballon d'Or and many see him as the favourite to scoop this year's most prestigious football award. Messi has had one one of the best individual year 2021 capping it with Copa Del Rey win for Barcelona and Copa America, his first senior trophy win for Argentina.

Those two and having had a hand in more goals prior to the season start and having won more MOTM awards than any other person puts him in the driving seat ahead of the likes of Robert Lewandowski, N'golo Kanté and Jorginho despite all winning more significant trophies especially Jorginho and N'golo Kanté.

However, Messi's move to PSG has turned out a bit slow for the six times world footballer of the year. He has failed to score nor assist in five league games which is his worst start ever to a season. His three goals so far for PSG have come in the UEFA Champions League.

It won't matter much as the voting for the Ballon d'Or voting has already closed, only final results will be announced. So Messi's fate either he would win or not is already sealed.
