FC Barcelona lacks quality players. Out of the great team they had in the last years, the majority of them left. And Ronald Koeman had pointed out recently that it was obvious they were needing a centreforward, because they have nobody in that position and Martin Braithwaite is not what they want.

At the same time, Lionel Messi has not found the best of himself since Luis Suarez, one of the best partners he has ever had, was kicked out and joined Atletico Madrid. He is suffering the lack of a striker as well, but he thinks he knows who might replace the Uruguayan. And according to Spanish reports, he suggested Koeman to sign a Mexican with experience to play there.

And that striker is Carlos Vela. He has been tearing up MLS with Los Angeles FC, despite not winning MLS Cup nor CONCACAF Champions League. Vela can play anywhere in attack and with Spanish citizenship, he will not be taking a non-EU slot. The club has been behind him in the past, but nothing happened.

With 31 years old, he could be a cheap short-term solution until the club gets in financial condition to sign someone younger. The Mexican spent six seasons at Real Sociedad, he knows the Spanish league and would not need to adapt. That is why Messi wants him, because it would correct the current problems with no downsides.
