Lionel Messi in crisis: the reasons why he will not be chosen the best player in UEFA this year
Since Lionel Messi made his debut at FC Barcelona, he has never had a season as chaotic as 2019/20 and UEFA has let him know.
For the first time, since 2010, Leo Messi will not be nominated for the player of the year award by UEFA. The Argentine was left out of the three candidates, something that also touched Cristiano Ronaldo, who accompanied the 10 in the nominations. Those selected were Kevin De Bruyne, Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer.
The shortlist of three candidates was selected by a jury made up of 80 coaches from the clubs that participated in the group stages of the Champions League and the 2019/20 Europa League, together with 55 journalists from the UEFA member associations. Messi was on the verge of entering the nominees with 53 votes but could not reach the Pole, the German and the Belgian. For his part, Cristiano only got 25 votes and was the last on the list, ranking 10th.
At the end of last season Lionel Messi was about to leave FC Barcelona due to the poor performance of both him and the team and there were rumors about his possible arrival in MLS. Will it be a matter of time for Messi to play in Major League Soccer?
