Real Madrid is aware, like the rest of the world of soccer, of Lionel Messi’s situation at the end of the season. In middle of lots of conflicts with Barcelona’s board, the Argentine master finishes his current contract next June 30, and seems quite likely to move on a free transfer. Despite the White House will not go after him, Messi could help the club.
The Merengues are not dreaming of bringing their biggest rival’s greatest player in history, not at all. Instead, they are desperate to sign who could possibly be the next best player in the world, PSG star Kylian Mbappé. The 22-year-old French player still has one more season in his contract, and a free transfer could only be possible from January 1, 2022, onwards, unless he agrees an extension.
Now, how much could Mbappé cost? Yes, the obvious answer is simply “a lot”. But we’ll get deeper into numbers. His transfer market value, according to Transfermarkt, is €180 million, which would convert into $217.8 million. Then, Real Madrid could wait until summer and see if they can repeat the strategy to sign Eden Hazard: waiting until the last year of contract. Negotiating a lower price could be possible when Mbappé approaches to the end of his contract.
Messi seems to be set to make a decision on his future only after Barcelona’s elections. Despite that, in case he moves to PSG, that will mean one thing for the French club: they will need to get rid of Mbappé, according to Spanish newspaper Marca. Their expenditure in salaries would mean a lot for the club’s finances, and the only player they can sell to drastically reduce that, is the 22-year-old French. Then, Real Madrid will be ready to welcome him onboard.
