Lionel Messi left Barcelona at the end of last season when it became obvious the club could not register him due to the La Liga's financial fair play policy. He joined PSG who are currently paying him a whopping salary of €41m. Messi revealed he had other offers but accepted PSG.
It has now emerged that one of the offers received by Lionel Messi was from Atletico Madrid who reached out to him through his friend and former teammate Luis Suarez. “I did not call Leo, but I did call Luis Suarez to ask him how Messi was, if he was willing or if there was a minimal possibility that he would come to Atletico Madrid [this summer].” Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said.
Spanish media outlet El Partidazo de COPE reported that Atletico Madrid were willing to offer Lionel Messi a salary of €20m per season but he turned it down and went to PSG. He probably turned it down because of Barcelona out of respect for the club he was at for 21years and has spent all of his professional career there.
Atletico Madrid bought Luis Suarez last season and won the La Liga title, they also re-signed their former player Antoine Griezmann at the beginning of this season, if they had signed Messi, it would have been Barcelona's front three playing in a rival club, a situation that not even Barcelona would have loved.
