The Argentine, the Portuguese and the Brazilian make up a select group
The world of football was severely affected by its income due to the coronavirus pandemic that impacted the entire planet. But despite this, the top stars of the discipline remain at the top of the ranking of the players who receive the highest earnings thanks to their contracts with their respective clubs or for remunerations they achieved through advertising guidelines.
In the last hours, and as happens in the run-up to each season finale, the renowned France Football magazine announced a list of the players who earned the most money in the last year. According to the French publication, the figure takes into account the gross salary, the advertising income of this campaign and the prizes and bonuses obtained in 2019-2020 were added.
In this list, the first place is occupied by Lionel Messi with a profit of 125 million euros. The Argentine star, who at the end of the previous season had shown his intention to leave Barcelona, now seemed to be closer to continuing in the culé team and would renew his contract with the Catalan institution before June 30. Figure in the recent consecration of the Copa del Rey, the number 10 will try to give a new title to the Blaugrana fans with the Spanish league and the fight that Koeman's team faces with its two main rivals, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
On the second step of the podium is Cristiano Rolando. The Juventus striker, who was eliminated from the Champions League early and is far from the top in the Italian Calcio, added 118 million euros. Waiting to know what will happen to his future, the Portuguese forward remains one of the most recognized footballers in the world and that is why he is followed by the big companies.
In the third location, the name that appears is that of the Brazilian Neymar Jr. The man who emerged in the Santos de Brazil, today is one of the great hopes of Paris Saint Germain on the way to consecration in Europe. At 29, Ney is going through a great footballing present and dreams of raising the Champions League with PSG. According to the France Football list, the attacker earned 98 million euros last season.
The one who follows the captain of the Brazil team is Gareth Bale. The Welsh midfielder, whose pass belongs to Real Madrid but is on loan until the end of the campaign at Tottenham, had income of 37 million of the currency of the European Union and surpassed the Spanish Andrés Iniesta by three million. The 36-year-old former Barcelona midfielder moved from Spain to Japan three years ago and today plays for Vissel Kobe in that country.
The sixth place of the 10 players who won the most money is Eden Hazard. The midfielder, for whom Real Madrid paid Chelsea in 2019 a sum close to 160 million euros, has earnings of 32 million of the same currency. The same amount that the Belgian won was obtained by two other famous attackers: the Englishman Raheem Sterling, from Manchester City, and the French Kylian Mbappé, a great figure of PSG. The world champion striker with France at the 2018 World Cup in Russia has to renew his contract with the French club, but rumors indicate that the next one could be the last season with the team as he would move to Madrid to play at the White House.
The last two places on the list are held by Robert Lewandowski, the Bayern Munich scorer, who had a revenue of 30 million euros, and Antoine Griezmann, who added 28 million in profit.
