Lionel Messi left Barcelona at the end of last season much to the disappointment of both club and player who had a 21 years relationship since Leo got to the club at the age of 13. Messi agreed to a paycut of about 50% so he could sign a new contract with the Catalan club.

The deal however was unsuccessful due to La Liga's financial fair play policy which meant the club could not register him after the club's wage limit was reduced to €97m. It was an emotional end as Messi gave his final speech and agreed a move to PSG to join up with former teammate Neymar Jr.

It has not gone well for both Lionel Messi and Barcelona after they separated. Lionel Messi is finding it hard to score for PSG, he has just one goal while Barcelona keeps recording losses, struggling to fill stadiums and having drop in sales of merchandise.

The club today published financial reports and reported a loss of £409m from last season and the debt grew to over £1.2bn. The shocking news was that the club could have been resolved if it was a public limited as they were in a state of technical bankruptcy.
