It was something that, sooner rather than later, was going to happen. Because after Zlatan Ibrahimovic criticized LeBron James harshly for immersing himself in politics and publicly supporting Joe Biden in the last election against Donald Trump, the Los Angeles Lakers forward picked up the glove and answered him. This came after the win against Portland Trail Blazzers, at home, 102-93 in which the California star finished with a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds.
Ibrahimovic in an interview on Thursday said sportspeople like four-time NBA champion James, who has been one of the NBA’s leading voices against racial injustice and police brutality, should avoid making the mistake of getting involved in political matters and instead focus on only sports. “I will never shut up about things that are wrong. I preach about my people and I preach about equality, social justice, racism, voter suppression - things that go on in our community,” James told reporters.
“I’ll use my platform to continue to shed light on everything that’s going on around this country and around the world. There’s no way I would ever just stick to sports, because I understand how powerful this platform and my voice is”.
LeBron even detailed that he did not understand the Milan player saying these words when he himself spoke of the prevailing racism in Sweden a couple of years ago. "It's funny that he says this, because in 2018 he talked about the same thing, issues about his last name and racism, on his return to Sweden," said the Ohio star, who expanded his explanation on why he considers it important to speak up and Clear: “For example I have a school with more than 300 children in Ohio. They need my voice and I use my platform to give it to them. There is no reason and in no way am I going to stick only to sport. This platform, my voice, is very powerful”.
