Karim Benzema silenced his critics and is very close to passing two Champions League legends
With his two goals against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Karim Benzema is getting himself a place among the best UEFA Champions League players ever and he is smelling a record.
Karim Benzema had a superb night with two goals that gave Real Madrid the ticket to UEFA Champions League RO16. The French got two headers vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach and his team won 2-0, after moments of doubting whether the Blancos would be eliminated in group stage for the first time ever.
And with those goals, Benzema expanded his list of Champions League goals, reaching the nice mark of 69 (57 with Real Madrid and 12 with Lyon). He is still quite far from the monster numbers of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but he is still threatening two legends of the tournament, one of them from Real Madrid itself.
That is because Benzema is just two goals behind Raúl and Robert Lewandowski, with 71 Champions League goals each. The former striker is still ahead Benzema in Real Madrid’s top scorers list, but this tournament is Benzema’s field. And the Polish, in his prime, has been rested in Bayern Munich match of today.
So there is a competition. Karim and Robert will surely pass Raúl and then, will think only about each other. Both players play for teams used to reach the final stages, so they will have plenty of matches to raise their tallies. Benzema is said to be a striker with few goal input, but he is proving his critics wrong match after match.
