Antoine Griezmann completed a shocking return to Atletico Madrid on the final day of the transfer window. Even though it was obvious FC Barcelona wanted to move on some of the highest-earners on their wage bill, no one saw the transfer of Antoine Griezmann coming. In less than 24 hours, the Frenchman completed his return to the Wanda Metropolitano.

After the departure of Lionel Messi from Camp Nou, Griezmann became the highest-paid player in Barcelona with a weekly wage of £574,000. The Frenchman was on a 7-year contract having signed from the Rojiblancos in 2019. The Barcelona hierarchy expressly revealed that it would require the big earners to take pay cuts or they would be sold from the club.

Griezmann apparently chose to leave, orchestrating a return to his former team under Diego Simeone. However, since the French World Cup winner was on an extremely high wage, he had to take a pay cut as part of the conditions to move to Atletico. One of the conditions is to take a 40% pay cut from his current salary at Barcelona. Since he moved to Atletico on loan, that meant he would still be on his Barcelona pay. This means that Antoine Griezmann will now earn only £334,000 weekly on his second spell with Atletico Madrid.

FC Barcelona agreed to a one-year loan deal with an obligation to buy for €40m with Atletico Madrid. The obligation to buy/loan period could be extended by another season if Barcelona agrees to it. However, the clause would come into immediate force if Griezmann plays up to 50% of the Rojiblancos matches this season. Griezmann spent just 2 seasons at the Camp Nou, in an ill-fated spell that saw him fail to hit the heights he did at Atletico Madrid.
