Back in 2017, a young and emerging talent signed a contract that, according to Le Parisien, all players sign previous to their international debut with the national team in France; his name was Kylian Mbappé. This document compromises the player to participate in marketing campaigns for the french national team.
Kylian and all of his teammates receive a sum of 25.000 euros for their participation in said campaigns, even if it is just a single spot. Today, Mbappé has announced that he will not be participating in the team's photos. Delphine Verheyden, his lawyer, claims that Mbappé has refused said pictures because of the brands that participate.
However, the French Football Federation has stated in their official claim that they “regret not coming to an understanding prior to the World Cup” and stating that the lack of accords is the reason why the french star is not in the team photos.
'Donatello's' image deals might be one of the reasons behind his newfound attitude and his legal procedure carried by his lawyer and repeated now for the second time. Mbappé earns around 4 million euros for his Nike marketing agreement and, according to Forbes, he earns a staggering 42 million dollars a year only for his image deals.
Regarding these claims, Mbappé has come out and pointed that his interest is not money, as he donates the 25.000 euros that the French Federation pay him to charity, but his actions make fans and teammates question his motives, especially after the last transfer window and his move on Real Madrid to take out more money from PSG.
