Héctor Herrera was not among the players at disposal of Diego Simeone to play the Derby against Real Madrid as he had previosly travelled to Mexico to be with her mother, victim of COVID-19. The player himself confirmed the news of his mom's passing on his social media.

According to newspaper Marca, Herrera was in Mexico after an emergency travel to make company to her 57-year-old mother. The midfielder is supposed to have asked for permission to the club from Madrid and this was the reason why he was not among the players in the squad to face the 'Merengues'.

The player born in Rosarito and also part of the Mexican National Team had previously missed several encounters with the 'Colchonero' team, also as a victim of COVID-19. One of this games was in Champions League against Chelsea where the Spanish club lost 1-0.

In February 25th Atlético Madrid had announced that Héctor Herrera was fully recovered from COVID-19 as he was the last player from a the group of footballers affected by the pandemic. Immediately, the Mexican midfielder was incorporated to the training sessions with the rest of the group.

Other players affected by the Coronavirus:

Héctor Herrera was not the only player positive of COVID-19 who had to miss several games for Atlético de Madrid. The Belgium winger Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and defender Mario Hermoso were also afected. Also the Portuguese youngster Joao Félix, French Moussa Dembélé and Thomas Lemar added themselves to the list.
