This hot prospect of a left back is considered the successor of Marcelo, and Real Madrid wants him to literally replace the Brazilian.
Marcelo has been one of the best, if not the best, left backs in the world last decade, competing with the likes of Jordi Alba and David Alaba, among others. But at 32 years old, his decline started. He is not a starter anymore, with Ferland Mendy taking his place, and the club want to get rid of him as soon as possible given his high wages.
So Florentino Pérez looked for replacements for him. And he does not want to spend a huge fee for a star because Real Madrid does not need that. But he found a very young player in that position at a not so high price, and his profile looks like he would likely reach consistent world class performances.
So the Blancos might be keen to spend the 45 million euro that Sporting Lisbon demands for Nuno Mendes. He made his debut this year and has not left the starting XI since. He has already played for every category of Portugal youth teams, so it is a matter of time until he is called up to play for senior squad.
However, Real Madrid is not the only one wanting him, being AC Milan the other contender. While the Italian club has the money asked, Madrid’s project has been proven to be more attractive for young players, so if things go as planned, this new Marcelo will literally succeed Marcelo.
