Manchester United will welcome one of its modern-day legends back to the club in Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese international completed a stunning £25m transfer to the EPL giants on Friday evening, ending a 2-year association with Juventus, while also ending a 12-year sojourn away from the Old Trafford. Ronaldo chose to call time on his stay in the Serie A after 2 seasons laden with goals.
Ronaldo was very successful in his first stint at Manchester United. He won 3 EPL titles under Sir Alex Ferguson whilst also winning the UEFA Champions League and a FIFA Ballon d'Or title. Playing alongside club legends like Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ruud van Nistelrooy, the young Portuguese forward then was not saddled with any leadership roles.
However, 12 years after leaving, Ronaldo has now developed into a mature leader on and off the pitch, famously leading a Portugal side to Euro 2016 victory. In the United squad, Cristiano Ronaldo would also be one of the most experienced campaigners and as such one of the leaders of the squad. Manchester United is currently being captained by Harry Maguire with Phil Jones, Paul Pogba, David de Gea and Nemanja Matic picking up the captain's armband on occasion.
With his return to United, it is expected that Ronaldo will be added to the captaincy roster and might indeed captain the Red Devils soon. His durability and fitness mean that he will most times be on the pitch and so in the absence of Maguire the captaincy can be passed to Cristiano Ronaldo.
