Since then, the Club América goalkeeper became the lone starting goalkeeper, as he stopped having any competition. Arguably, “Chuy” Corona was having a better moment, but Ochoa has always been a golden mine for Mexico National Team and their sponsors.

According to sports journalist Rubén Rodríguez, when Miguel Herrera hadn’t decided yet who was going to be the starting goalkeeper for El Tri in Brazil 2014, Televisa made Ochoa train every day on an adjacent field to where Miguel Herrera was training at the moment.

Did that work to convince Herrera?

Herrera had to see how Ochoa trained and was slowly convinced of giving him the starting role in the World Cup, although he also knew that “Paco Memo” was one of the favorite players of the sponsors, as he’s been the face of El Tri for a while, which also influenced his decision.

How did El Tri do in Brazil 2014?

Before securing their participation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, El Tri had to be part of a playoff game against New Zealand, given that they couldn’t access directly when José Manuel de la Torre was the coach. Herrera took over El Tri for those games, where Mexico National Team won by a 9-3 aggregate that gave them the last ticket to Brazil.

El Tri was part of group A and debuted against Cameroon on June 13 with a 1-0 victory. The second game of the group stage was against Brazil, where Ochoa had one of his most memorable performances, and El Tri earned a point after a scoreless draw. The last game was a 3-1 victory over Croatia. Unfortunately, they had to face the Netherlands in the round of 16, where they were eliminated.
