Chicago Fire's Gastón Giménez, in a game full of emotions and with the VAR playing a central role, scored the goal that gave the victory to Paraguay against Venezuela for the second date of the South American Qualifiers. This was Gimenez's second game with the national team coached by the Argentinian Eduardo Berizzo.
Many Argentine-born footballers have defended the Paraguayan jersey, including Nestor Ortigoza, Lucas Barrios, Andres Cubas, Juan Iturbe, Jonathan Fabbro and New York Red Bulls player Alejandro Romero Gamarra. But 'Tonga' has something that differentiates him from other players: he did play a game with the Argentina. The current Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni, called him to face Mexico in a friendly game in 2018. The Chicago Fire player got a few minutes in that game.
There was a curious event during that international game. When Argentina's delegation arrived at the Malvinas Argentinas stadium, in Mendoza, they realized that the former Velez Sarsfield player wasn't with the squad. It happened that the current player of the Paraguay was forgotten by the team at the hotel where they where staying.
The footballer warned his teammates that he was going to the bathroom. When he got back, he realized that the bus was no longer there. They had gone to the stadium without him and no one had noticed that he was missing. Gimenez had taken a taxi to get to the stadium. During the game, Gimenez replaced Leandro Paredes two minutes before the end of the match and it was the only time he played for the Argentinian national team.
