Two players have defined the last 15 years in the world of football. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. They have been eternal rivals and have shattered numerous records between them. It is almost unimaginable that there's any record in World football that is not held between either of these two players.

The debate over who is better would rags on for a long time but we will look at 5 records that Argentine Lionel Messi holds that Cristiano Ronaldo may never break.

4 consecutive Ballon d'Or awards: This is perhaps the toughest and the most impossible. Messi achieved this feat between 2009 and 2012 during a period of utter dominance. The closest Ronaldo has got to achieving this is when he won the coveted awards back-to-back twice (2013 & 2014 and 2016 & 2017)

91 goals in one calendar year: Ronaldo is a goal machine by all standards but he might never break this record. Lionel Messi was at his prolific best in 2012 when he scored 91 goals that year. In the process, he broke Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals in one calendar year.

50 goals in one La Liga season: Lionel Messi was the undisputed top scorer in the 2011-12 La Liga season. He broke this record held by his eternal rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. With Ronaldo now playing in Italy, his age and complexity of return to Spain, it looks like Messi will hold this record for a long time. But never say never with Cristiano Ronaldo.

150 La Liga Assists: Lionel Messi isn't just a phenomenal goal scorer but an amazing playmaker also. This is perhaps one of his advantages over Ronaldo. He is a team player and has racked up 169 assists in La Liga. This is a record Cristiano Ronaldo will never meet.

400 league goals in one club: This is another undisputed record of Lionel Messi. He owns the top-scorer award in Barcelona and the Spanish top-flight with 405 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo is the next closest with 311 goals. This is a way behind Lionel Messi.
