Borussia Dortmund CEO has opened up on how the club signed Erling Haaland ahead of Manchester United.

Erling Haaland announced himself to the bigger stage when he scored a UEFA Champions League hat-trick on his debut in the competition for RB Salzburg. Many top clubs were interested in signing him from Salzburg but he eventually went to Dortmund.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly tried to use his Norway connections to try and get Haaland but it was unsuccessful.. Dortmund CEO revealed that Manchester United had the best offer but both player and his agent felt Dortmund was in the right step.

Haaland has so far impressed at Dortmund and has scored 68 goals in 67 games since joining Borussia Dortmund, which further increased the pressure on his agent to find a suitable deal for the striker. Chelsea made a bid of £130m, it's inexplicable why it was rejected.

"Our offer for Haaland was not the best”, Watzke told OMR. “The offer from Manchester United was better. However, Mino Raiola realised that Erling is better off with us. We have no inhibitions to let them play.”

Haaland's release clause of £68m will become active at the end of the season. He's currently out injured and could miss the rest of the year.
