Lionel Messi deservedly won his seventh Ballon d'Or award in Paris last night to extend a record he holds. Messi won his sixth Ballon d'Or in 2019, a record and extended it last night to go two clear of Cristiano Ronaldo who has five.

The pair have 12 Ballon d'Or awards between them and the only time another player other than the two won it was Luka Modric in 2018. Messi moving clear has sparked a lot of debate on whether Cristiano Ronaldo could match him.

Lionel Messi's comment after the award ceremony last night has now been reported to target Cristiano Ronaldo. "I don't know if the record is beatable. I just have to accept it but I’m not sure if it can be beaten. Seven is really impressive." Messi said after the ceremony.

The comment doesn't target any player in particular, Cristiano Ronaldo may be the player next after Messi in numbers of the awards won but there are youngsters who are just starting their careers who could aim for it but it appears unrealistic.
