Manchester City began the defence of their title with a 1-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Matchday 1 of the 2021-22 season. The Citizens were outclassed by Tottenham for the 4th time running, having lost all the matches they've played at the newly constructed stadium. Nuno Espirito Santo took charge of his first EPL game and outclassed the impressive Pep Guardiola.

After the disappointing result, Manchester City has put in two 5-0 victories over Norwich and Arsenal FC. That they have swiftly bounced back to form is important, with many other title contenders picking up more points. The 2021 EPL champions will expect to challenge for the league title once again after completing a British-record £100m deal for Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.

Which players did Manchester City sign this summer?

The Citizens were a bit cautious in the dealings in the transfer market this summer, with only £100m spent on acquiring Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.

They were in talks to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur but the deal fell through because of a difference in valuation. Tottenham's Daniel Levy insisted on receiving  the full value of £160m for the England striker while City was willing to pay only £120m

Which players can help City retain their title?

Whilst opponents Chelsea and United will be calling upon numerous new faces like Romelu Lukaku, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Saul Niguez for a shot at the EPL title, Manchester City would have to largely depend on former personnel to retain their title.

Kevin de Bruyne will hope for an injury-free season whilst Ilkay Gundogan, Raheem Sterling, Ruben Dias and Ferran Torres will hope to have stellar seasons again.
