Ligue 1 TV viewing figures were blown out of proportion after Lionel Messi played his first game after joining the league giant Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in a 2-0 win over Reims. Only a player of Lionel Messi status could cause that significant change.

His debut smashed the number of most viewed matches in the competition's history with more than 10.5 million tuning in, in France alone. The arrival of Lionel Messi to the Ligue is kind of a revival for the league with Amazon Prime helping the League out of a commercial black hole. Amazon Prime paid €275 million to secure broadcasting rights for the Ligue.

Without Lionel Messi in La Liga the league has fallen out of grace. The Spanish League has suffered enough in the last few years with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo now Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos are off to PSG.

Even though Lionel Messi's departure clashed with the time La Liga went on ESPN. It would have been worse for the league at a time when the financial situation of the two league giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. La Liga signed ano eight years $1.4 billion partnership with ESPN which will increase their worldwide viewing. Lionel Messi's presence could have been an edge but unfortunately he left at exactly the same time and the 2021/2022 El Classico reported the lowest turnout in decades due to the absence of Lionel Messi.
