Lionel Messi did not play in the last Argentina match of the Copa America. Argentina defeated Peru 2-0 last night at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami with Messi on the bench and not subbed on during the game. The Argentine icon felt pain during the match against Chile this past week, which prevented him from playing against Peru. Messi spoke after the match against Chile that he didn't feel right and that he needed to potentially rest in the next game. He has now rested against Peru and now has until July 4th to recover and get ready for the quarterfinals of Copa America. Messi seemed fine on his way towards the quarterfinals, but now reports suggest that he could potentially not be fully ready for the quarterfinals. A journalist reported that Messi's participation is still in doubt, and his condition will be evaluated day by day. That was the report that worried fans, as his participation in the quarterfinals would be risky for him and could lead to him missing the rest of the tournament.
Another Argentine journalist, Pablo Gravillon, reported the status of Messi's injury and what could result in the Inter Miami star player not starting in the next match. Gravillon said, "Messi could be a substitute on Thursday. If he manages to catch up, it will be difficult due to a slight tear in some muscle fibers. He may be on the bench and called up if necessary. We will monitor the development of his condition day by day."
The Copa America tournament will now enter the knockout stages, and Messi and Argentina could play a maximum of three more matches if they advance past the quarterfinals. Messi and Argentina will play the second-place team in Group B, who for now is Ecuador. It could also be Mexico if they beat Ecuador tonight.
Although the reports suggest that Messi may not be fully ready for the quarterfinals, his teammates in the national team say otherwise. Lautaro Martinez said, "Leo is fine, we hope he can be in the next game. I dedicated the goal to him because I know what Leo means to us."
Angel Di Maria said, "Leo is fine, he's recovering, we hope he will be ready for the next game. Today's victory is for him." Emiliano Martinez said, "It was better for Leo to rest and be ready for the quarterfinals."
