Days before the beginning of Copa America, Argentina fans worry because of the giant of Europe that wants Lionel Scaloni
Lionel Messi’s coach in Argentina could potentially join a European giant.
Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team will soon be prepared to play in the 2024 Copa America that will take place in the United States next month. Argentina will want to reclaim the trophy they won in the 2021 Copa America in Brazil, as the World Champions are major favorites for this tournament. Argentina fans are worried before the Copa America starts because their manager, Lionel Scaloni, is now linked to a big European club. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that AC Milan has contacted Lionel Scaloni about the head coaching job, which is very much liked within the club, but there is no formal meeting yet.
AC Milan is also interested in Paulo Fonseca from Lille LOSC in France, but the Argentine coach seems like a preferable option. Milan’s current manager, Stefano Pioli, will leave the club at the end of the season, with the Italian linked to joining Napoli next season. Milan is also interested in Argentine manager Marcelo Gallardo, who just left Al Ittihad from the Saudi Pro League.
Scaloni became the coach of Argentina in 2018 as a caretaker because of the failure of Argentina in the 2018 World Cup and guided the national team to a third-place finish in the 2019 Copa America in Brazil. Scaloni led the Argentina team to the Copa America win in 2021 after defeating Brazil 1-0 at the Maracana. Argentina also won the 2022 Finalissima against Italy, who won the 2020 EUROS, by beating them 3-0 at Wembley Stadium. Then Scaloni guided the team to win the FIFA World Cup 2022 against France in an epic 3-3 draw but won it 4-2 on penalties.
Argentina’s opponents in the 2024 Copa America
Argentina is in Group A in the Copa America tournament, which will be held in the United States for the first time since the Copa America Centenario in 2016. Argentina will play the first game of the tournament against Canada on June 20th at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Their second group stage game will be against Chile at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey/ New York. Argentina’s final group stage match will be against Peru at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
