Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are already planning to sign some new players for next season. The club is looking for midfielders in the summer transfer window, and one of the players that they were linked with heavily was West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta. The Brazilian is one of the most creative midfielders in the Premier League, and Man City looked to be in pole position to sign him. A potential deal for the Brazilian seems to have fallen apart after Paqueta was charged for allegedly breaching betting rules. He could face a ban of 10 years from football if he is found guilty. Now Manchester City targets another Brazilian midfielder who could arrive after the Copa America. Man City and Guardiola want to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. The midfielder is worth around $85 million, but Newcastle could ask for more than $110 million as a transfer fee.
The likelihood of Man City signing Guimarares is high because of the problem Newcastle United is facing. Eduardo Burgos from Diario AS reports that Financial Fair Play may force Newcastle to sell and balance its books after missing out on Europe, which means that Man City is in contention to sign the Brazilian midfielder this summer.
Newcastle finished 7th in the Premier League, but since Manchester United won the FA Cup trophy against Manchester City this past weekend, Newcastle United misses out on the UEFA Europa Conference League spot. Man United will play in the Europa League despite finishing 8th due to the FA Cup trophy, while Chelsea will play in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Bruno Guimaraes played a total of 50 matches for Newcastle United this season across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing ten assists.
Guimaraes will be playing for the Brazilian national team in the Copa America this summer. He is likely to start in the matches for Brazil due to his high level and the low amount of midfielders on the list. Paqueta may not play in the tournament due to the charges he received, which also makes Guimaraes a guaranteed starter on the team.
