Liga MX returns in the second half of the year with a new season, which for the first time in at least two decades will have Cruz Azul as defending champions and highly competitive squads. As has been customary since 1996, Mexican soccer has implemented short tournaments as a system of competition, i.e., in one soccer year there is the possibility of having two champions and it is played with 17 rounds and a decisive phase that includes a Playoff, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final.

Which teams make up Liga MX

As there will be no promotions in these seasons, the teams will remain the same as last year, i.e. the capital will continue to have its three traditional teams (América, Cruz Azul and Pumas), Guadalajara two (Atlas and Chivas), Monterrey two (Tigres and Rayados), while the other teams are distributed throughout the Mexican Republic, such as Puebla, Toluca, Pachuca, Querétaro, León, Atlético de San Luis, Necaxa, FC Juárez, Mazatlán FC, Tijuana, Santos Laguna and FC Juárez.

Throughout the history of Mexican soccer, there have been teams that, through hard work and perseverance, have won medals and trophies.

7. Pachuca (6):

Pachuca are in sixth position with six league titles won, the last one being in the Clausura 2016 against Monterrey. Championships: Invierno 1999 (vs. Cruz Azul), Invierno 2001 (vs. Tigres), Apertura 2003 (vs. Tigres), Clausura 2006 (vs. San Luis), Clausura 2007 (vs. América) and Clausura 2016 (vs. Rayados).

6. Leon (7)

The Panzas Verdes of León also enter the top of the 7 'greats' of Mexican soccer. The Esmeraldas have 7 championships in national football.
Championships: 1947-48, 1949-49, 1951-52, 1955-56, 1991-92, Apertura 2013 (vs. América) and Clausura 2014 (vs. Pachuca).

5. Pumas (7)

The Pumas of the National Autonomous University of Mexico have seven league titles to their name. The last one came in the 2011 Clausura Tournament against Morelia.

4. Cruz Azul (8)

The case of the Cementera Cruz Azul is a poignant one. It is considered one of the most important teams in Mexico, but has not won a league title for 21 years.

3. Toluca (10)

Yes, the Toluca Devils are already considered by experts and analysts to be one of the 'greats' of Aztec soccer. And it is well deserved, since they have 10 crowns to their name.

2. Guadalajara (12)

Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara are Mexico's most popular club and with their 12 league titles are the second biggest team in the country.
Championships: 1956-57, 1958-59, 1959-60, 1960-61, 1961-62, 1963-64, 1964-65, 1969-70, 1986-87, Summer 1997 (vs. Toros Neza), Apertura 2006 (vs. Toluca) and Clausura 2017 (vs. Tigres).

1. América (13)

The Águilas del América are the winningest team in Mexico with 13 league titles, and can also boast that no one can match them in Cup titles (6) or Concachampions (7).
