Total scandal in European football and that can mean that both the Champions League and the Europa League disappear or become higher ranking tournaments. It is that Milan, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham announced the creation of the European Club Super League.

"We are going to help football at all levels to take its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than 4 billion followers and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to the wishes of the fans", said Florentino Pérez, who will be the president of this Super League.

The birth of this tournament, which goes outside of UEFA and FIFA, would put the dispute of the Champions League and the Europa League in check. Without going any further, it is not ruled out that several of these clubs stop being 'partners' of the highest football entities.

The creation of the European Super League took place in the midst of the economic crisis that the clubs are experiencing. The leaders understand that this tournament could give them more income than the Champions League, for example. For their part, UEFA and FIFA are expected to sanction the clubs and take some important measures, such as proclaiming PSG, who was not part of the Super League, champion of the current Champions League.

Official statement of the Super League

Twelve of the most important football clubs in Europe announce today that they have reached an agreement to form a new competition, the Super League, governed by their Founding Clubs. AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur they've joined as Founding Clubs. Three more clubs will be invited to join before the inaugural season which will start as soon as possible.

Looking ahead, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA seeking the best solutions for the Super League and for world football as a whole.

The creation of the new League occurs when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability of the current economic model of European football. For years, the Founding Clubs have aimed to improve the quality and intensity of existing European competitions and, in particular, to create a tournament in which the best clubs and players can compete against each other more frequently.

The pandemic has revealed that a strategic vision and a commercial approach are necessary to increase the value and aid for the benefit of the football pyramid as a whole. In recent months there has been an intense dialogue with the governing bodies on the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe that the solutions proposed by the regulators do not solve the fundamental questions, which are both the need to offer higher quality matches, and to obtain additional financial resources for the entire world of football.

Superliga: competition format

There will be 20 clubs, the 15 Founding Clubs and an additional five teams that will qualify annually based on the previous season's performance;

All games will be played during the week, all clubs will continue to compete in their respective national leagues, thus preserving the traditional calendar that is at the center of club life;

The season will begin in August with the participation of the clubs in two groups of ten, which will play round-trip matches; The top three from each group will automatically qualify for the quarterfinals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will play an additional two-legged playoff. Subsequently, two-party playoffs will be played from the quarters to reach the final, which will be played as a single game, at the end of May, in a neutral venue.

As soon as possible after the start of the men's competition, the corresponding women's league will be launched, which will contribute to the advancement and development of women's football.
