The 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina took an unexpected turn on Sunday as Brazilian Health authorities invaded the pitch to try to detain some Argentine players. The players were accused by the health authorities of giving false declarations concerning their Covid-19 status before entering the country. The affected players are said to be Emiliano Martinez, Emiliano Buendia, Giovanni Lo Celso and Christian Romero. All of these players started the game against Brazil except for Emiliano Buendia.

On the other hand, the Brazilian national team could not field up to 9 of their senior players due to the Covid-19 regulations. Brazil had earlier announce that anyone who has been to the United Kingdom in the past 14 days should observe mandatory quarantine before being allowed into the country. All 4 players are affected by these rules as they play in the English Premier League.

However, there are rumours that the Brazilian football authorities allowed the match to be disrupted because they were afraid they would lose the match because of their depleted squad and Argentina's relatively strong squad. The Selecao were unable to field most of their first-team players with only Neymar, Gabriel Barbosa, Casemiro and Eder Militao available for selection out of their preferred 11.

Argentina on the other hand fielded a strong team that consisted of Emiliano Martinez, Nicholas Otamendi, Christian Romero, Giovanni Lo Celso, Rodrigo de Paul, Lautaro Martinez, Angel di Maria and Lionel Messi amongst others. This calibre of players by Argentina perhaps made Brazil fear that they would be defeated at home and thus made them invite the health authorities to interrupt the match.
