Óscar Tabárez, el Maestro, was unable to overcome a series of bad results in the Qualifiers that put him out of the classification, so far, of the Celeste heading to Qatar 2022. The last cycle of Tabárez was the longest of selection around the world. It began in March 2006 and ended with 224 games: 106 wins, 58 matches and 60 losses.
He is also the coach who led the most matches in the South American Qualifiers with 74 and is the Uruguayan with the most victories with 31. As if that were not enough, he is the second coach with the most matches to lead the same World Cup team and is within the select group of five that won 10 or more matches in this competition.
Among the objectives achieved is not only the teaching and improvement of soccer players in the selected team, but also the title of the Copa América 2011, the semi-finals of South Africa 2010 and the qualifications for both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

Those who know him well speak of a coach who does not impose, but persuades. That he does not manage from a position of hierarchy and power, and who cares what the player thinks, but who cares to teach him what it is to be Uruguayan and wear the light blue jersey. His ability and his constant look to the future were the conclusion that there was no better way than to continue with him in command.
However, the years do not pass alone, and some people are less fortunate than others. In fact, Tabárez received a strange disease called Guillain-Barré syndrome, which only 47.5 out of every 100,000 people suffer from. His mobility deteriorated, but his spirit never did despite reaching 74.
