Gerardo Martino arrived in Mexico as a belated Christmas present, on January 7, 2019. He was introduced at the High Performance Center (CAR) and three months later made his official debut with his third national team. From there and with a pandemic in between, "Tata's" journey is counted as a resounding success.

Even though the number one objective is in Qatar and he still has 19 months to go, the balance after two years could hardly be better.  With a view to the Qatar 2022 World Cup cycle, Tata Martino was appointed coach of the Mexican National Team, as his experience in projects such as Barcelona or the Paraguay and Argentina national teams convinced the directors.

At the beginning of 2019, the coach made his debut leading the Tricolor team, sowing hope for his way of working and methodology, convincing players and fans. Although he suffered up to eight absentees for the Gold Cup due to personal decisions and injuries, Tata was able to put together a winning group that has mixed good footballing performances and positive results.

How Gerardo Martino has fared so far as coach of the Mexico National Team.

The Argentine DT made his debut at the helm of El Tri in March 2019 and since then has coached Mexico in 35 matches with a balance of 27 wins, five draws and three defeats.  The complications during the final phase of the Gold Cup, especially the close overtime against Haiti, shook their credibility; however, the team's identity was present, the rotations no longer gave room for controversy and the title won reassured fans and critics.

Two months went by and the friendly matches returned, where they suffered their first defeat, a very convincing one against Argentina. The end of 2019 came with the controversial creation of the Concacaf Nations League, where Mexico had to compete again against rivals from the zone, so the friendlies against powers were eliminated at that time. Even so, Martino did not relax and achieved another full house of victories.

The 2019 Gold Cup was the first national team title, who now has nine trophies to his name.

"I have lost much more than I have won", was one of Gerardo Martino's recent phrases that set off alarm bells for fans of the Mexican national team. That was before he won his last championship in the United States, where he added one more to his not-so-short list of successes, contrary to what he says. The El Tri coach has indeed taken several Olympic laps during his roughly two-decade career, adding the 2019 Gold Cup.
