The defender signed from Ajax back in October 2020 for a fee of £21.5m but he has not been a focal point in the team since the departure of Ronald Koeman. So far this season the United States international has featured 15 times, which included the recent midweek Champions League fixture, where he was substituted.

At the rate Barcelona is capitulating, the Catalan club could miss the 2022-23 Champions League altogether. After 15 LaLiga games played, the club sits one position behind a Europa Conference League spot. Dest’s potential departure is coming before the real madness goes down in Barcelona.

The rumor going around is that Dest, Frenkie De Jong, and Marc Andre Ter-Stegen could all be heading out this transfer window in an attempt to stop some of Barcelona’s financial bleeding.

Spanish media reports

According to Spanish media, Dest isn’t Xavi’s first choice for starting and could be in a battle for minutes in the future. Since Xavi’s arrival to Barcelona Dest has started three out of a possible six games and only gone the full 90 minutes once.

El Nacional have reported that Dest is interested in departing the club and a move to Bayern Munich is something that he is trying to push for, having requested to the president Joan Laporta to sell him.

Ronald Koeman´s departure impacts Dest decision

Sergiño Dest has been one of the big losers at Barça after the departure of Ronald Koeman. With the Dutchman on the bench, he was an undisputed starter, and he played absolutely everything, either as a winger or even as an extreme skill. The ex-coach of Benfica, Valencia, Everton, or Southampton had full confidence in the 21-year-old player, and he showed it in every match.

Dest does not have the confidence of Xavi Hernandez. Dest is thinking about leaving, and everything indicates that he will be a substitute in the next games. Sergiño has contacted the Germans in recent weeks, to convey his intention to leave Barça, and start a new adventure elsewhere. And he hopes that Julian Nagelsmann is interested in opening the door for him.

Dest challenges at Bayern Munich

The challenge for the starting position at Bayern Munich won’t be a cakewalk under any circumstances. Benjamin Pavard has the right-back spot locked down with little challenge from Bouna Sarr or Josip Stanisic, who are both out injured. Dest will need to seriously impress in order to become a playmaker for Germany's top club.

Bayern was in the hunt to sign Dest back in 2020 when Barcelona swooped up the American from Ajax. The upcoming winter transfer window could be the Bavarian giant’s chance to take what was stolen.

If the transfer does surface, then Dest’s quest to win a Champions League title is back in the cards. UEFA changed the rule on Champions League eligibility several years ago, so even though Dest played in the group stage with Barcelona, he could still represent Bayern in the knockout stages.
