Cavani, whose contract ends in June, has been linked with a move to Barcelona in January or a return to South America, but Rangnick said the 34-year-old vowed to stay until the end of the campaign.

"I told him that, if it were up to me, I would want him to stay," Rangnick commented.

Cavani’s words to Rangnick

"Edi told me that I could trust him until the end of the season, and that he would continue to give his best to become a role model for the young players. If he starts, I know he will be happy, but if he has to come off the bench, I know he will also give his all for the team," said the German coach, as reported by the club's official website.

"And even if he doesn't play, he will try to be the best possible example for the other players, and for me this is good news."

Cavani has been getting more and more minutes since recovering from injury and with the arrival of Rangnick on the bench. The change to a 4-4-2 system gave the Uruguayan the chance to share the attack with Cristiano Ronaldo, when the arrival of the Portuguese star had relegated the player from Uruguay to the substitutes when playing with a single striker.

For Rangnick, Cavani "has a very strong mentality" and can bring a lot to Manchester United, in a squad where he is one of the most experienced.

"He has a lot of experience and a good work ethic, so I think he could be a good example for the rest of the players," the DT added.

United and Rangnick kick off their FA Cup campaign with a home game against Aston Villa on Monday.

The last trophy lifted by United was in 2017

The club has not won a trophy since lifting the Europa League cup under Jose Mourinho, and Rangnick has guaranteed to field a strong side against Steven Gerrard's Villa.

Villa have already won at Old Trafford this season - a 1-0 victory in September - and since Gerrard's appointment have moved up to 13th in the standings, despite losing their last two games against Chelsea and Brentford.

A home game against Middlebrough in the fourth round awaits the winner.

Palmeiras is an option for the Uruguayan in the summer

According to UOL, the Brazilian club has made an official offer for Argentinean Valentín Castellanos, who currently plays for New York City of the MLS in the United States.

If the arrival of Castellanos does not take place, Palmeiras could try to look for a striker of the caliber of Edinson Cavani (Manchester United).

In Brazil they are excited about the possibility of his return to South American soccer, but for now nothing has been officially confirmed.
